Inventory: Their viola, which has a fox at the tip of the handle. The fox is their palisman, a magical familiar.

Powers —

Skills: Raine is smart, with a healthy amount of curiosity. They are willing and able to teach themself new skills if they’re interested. They’re also methodical and capable of making and executing long-term plans. If needed, they will make sacrifices for the sake of the greater good.

They also used to be a teacher for the bard coven and are pretty good with kids.

Superpowers: Raine is a witch! And specifically a bard witch. They’re very adept and powerful, from changing the chemistry of liquids through sound waves to producing slicing notes or even summoning thunderstorms with their viola.

Limitations: Their magic is limited to bard spells because of their coven sigil, which seals all their other magic away. On a more personal note, they have very bad stage fright.

Personality —
Please EITHER (1) Summarize your character's personality — including motivations, behaviors, and psychology — in 300-600 words OR (2) Respond to the questions below.

  • What were your character's most formative experiences?:
  • We don’t know that much about Raine’s childhood, but we do know that they went to an expensive school on a scholarship at first. It’s implied that they were fairly socially isolated there, though they didn’t seem exactly shy as a kid. However, at once point they complain: “See? Bard magic can be cool!”, which makes me think that their classmates underestimated them because of the type of magic they focus on, similarly to how another character in the series is underestimated because of his focus on illusions.

A lot changes for Raine when they attend H.E.C.K., an intellectual competition between students of different schools, where they meet Eda Clawthorne. The two of them become fast friends. Here, Raine first witnesses the propaganda of the coven system, especially in a game where the attending students are sorted into covens vs wild witches, with the ones assigned coven being instructed to hunt the wild witches down. It’s a twist of irony that Raine is assigned as a wild witch and Eda as a coven witch, considering their roles are reversed as adults. Together, they go up against Terra Snapdragon, a coven head who is in charge of the event. Thus, Raine shows their capability to defy authorities early on.

After the event, they transfer to Hexside, the same school Eda goes to. The two become friends and eventually romantic partners. Raine also seems to have been friendly with other students here.

As a young adult, they end up joining the bard coven, implying that at this point, they still have some faith in the system. This changes once they start a teaching position and realize the repressive methods by which coven members are recruited, thus setting them on a decades-long mission to change the system from within.

  • What values, morals, and/or philosophies does your character live by, and how are those beliefs demonstrated? What happens when they have to compromise what they believe in?
  • Raine is very driven by justice. After recognizing the coven system for what it is, they devoted their life to dismantling it from the inside. It was the fact that coven members were recruited by force and those who resisted mysteriously disappeared that set them on the path to rebellion. Thus, I think it can be said that they are against authoritarianism and are ready to fight for the betterment of society at large. They are able to temporarily compromise on their morals if it will ultimately serve their end goal.

  • What is your character afraid of? How does avoiding or preventing these fears influence their actions and decisions? Well, for one thing, they’re afraid of big audiences. It seems this stage fright stems from a bad experience with a school play. To this day, they despise giving monologues, so if you were ever to need someone to distract a room full of people, Raine is not the one you’re looking for.

They are afraid of Belos winning and going through with the Day of Unity, which they know would put everyone in the Boiling Isles in grave danger. In their attempts to stop this, they are absolutely willing to go over dead bodies, both their own and others’.

They are also very much afraid of Eda being hurt, to the point that they pushed her away, even though Eda’s participation was actually key to pretty much the only plan to stop Belos they and their allies had; thus showing that they do sometimes let their personal feelings get in the way of things.

  • What goals does your character have right now? What do they want, and how do they go about getting it?
  • They want to stop Belos. In order to do this, they first teamed up with some younger members of the Bard Coven, together with whom they tried to save wild witches from being captured. Later, they team up with Darius and Eberwolf, two other coven heads, and come up with a plan to enter the Emperor’s mind, which fails, and later with the plan to stop the draining spell that Belos wants to use to eradicate all witchkind on the Day of Unity. They work quite well in groups and have been seeking out allies for a while. They also like coming up with silly group names with animal acronyms, and that this seems to irk Darius greatly is just a bonus.

Their other goal is keeping Eda safe, which, as previously detailed, stands in direct conflict with their plan to stop the Emperor. They’re currently pretending to not remember their reunion with Eda in attempt to push her away and keep her far, far away from the dangerous business of rebellion.

    Gameplay —
Areas of Interest / Brainstorming: Given their background, they’ll likely be wary of the guilds and remain unaligned, at least for now. While they’re familiar with working within the system, I think that at this point, given the chance not to be sorted into an arbitrary group, they will take it. They’re probably gonna spend a lot of time marveling at the human realm (what do you mean, rain that doesn’t boil?), and will still try to help out if they see injustice happening. I can see them trying to make a living giving music lessons. I’m excited to further develop their character and to see where the game takes them!
